What is Lumbar Support and Do I need it?

I hear this word a lot and really don't fully understand what it means. At wikipedia.com it means "In anatomy, lumbar is an adjective that means of or pertaining to the abdominal segment of the torso, between the diaphragm and the sacrum (pelvis)."So why do we need lumbar support? Does everyone need Lumbar Support?




There are several muscles in the low back that assist with rotation, flexibility and strength. These muscles are susceptible to injury, especially while lifting heavy objects, or lifting while twisting. A low back muscle strain can be extremely painful but will usually heal within a few days or weeks.




The lumbar portion of the spine bears the most body weight and also provides the most flexibility, a combination that makes it susceptible to injury and wear and tear over time. This is why low back pain is so prevalent.




In fact the lumbar is what causes man to be standing erect as opposed to other mammals. These provide the human body with flexibility and necessary rotation.




It is this lumbar portion which gets stressed out so much often and of course is prone to injuries as well. There should be maximum care taken for the lumbar area, since that is also what causes us to be standing erect.




In fact in almost all the human beings the tendency is that they do not have a correct posture and that causes the lumber to injured or sprained and people then need lumbar support .




Car lumbar support is also needed when you are driving for long hours and if you are driving long distance then make sure that you have the car lumbar support with you.




People who work on computers all day long also need to have the ergonomically designed chairs to reduce the disc pressure on the lumbar area. The chairs should have a lumber support area of 5 cm and the angle between the seat and the backrest should be 120 degrees. The best position to reduce back pressure is the standing position but that is not the best way to work so you need to very careful about your lumbar region and the kind of chair you use.




Good care of your lower back area is important and that may mean having a lumber support pillow where and whenever you sit for long periods of time if you don't have a lumbar supported chair or seat. Also, if you lift heavy objects a lumbar support belt should be worn.




Bottom line is that your lumbar area of your back is very important to you and should be protected. So lumbar support is needed for most people.
